The Árainn Mhór Brewing Company is a new Irish Microbrewing Enterprise currently being established on the island of Árainn Mhór, CountyDonegal with the assistance of Udaras na Gaeltachta in Donegal.

Only in the last few years has Ireland begun to experience a certain variety and choice in the area of locally produced premium quality beers as the small number of indigenous microbreweries make their presence felt. Up until the early 1900’s regional breweries were plentiful throughout Ireland offering a variety of beers and ales, each unique in its own right. Since the early 1900’s the Irish beer industry has been dominated for the most part by the large international mass-produced beer brands. Against this backdrop and a desire to provide the beer consuming public with premium-crafted alternatives the Árainn Mhór Brewing Company is being established.

We chose the island of Árainn Mhór as a base because of its natural beauty and rich history. Location, right on the western edge of Europe gives the island a unique way of life with wind and sea providing a distinct environmental experience. Frequent ferry services across from Burtonport on the mainland provide an exciting gateway to the island over a short 30 minute trip.

Arainn Mhor Island has been inhabited since prehistoric times and it's likely to have been one of Donegal's first coastal population centres. Archaeological sites on the island have been dated to the Early Iron Age (800 BC) and the island was also home to a number of Gaelic chieftains, Manus Óg O'Domhnaill (Manus O'Donnell), a cousin of the Donegal chieftain Aodh Dubh O'Domhnaill, being its most famous.
